Virtual Schooling 21f

The more I read about Virtual School the more I like about the convenience. It is beneficial to those that will be successful with this type of learning/setting.  This is perfect for the student with leukemia or any other serious illness.  I think it is perfect for the mature student that decides this is the best route for them and they are self-motivated and able to complete all of the assignments.  But the students that don't like their teachers, I don't agree with a request for virtual school.  I am 39(not too old) and I was always told that I am not in school to like my teacher, I am their to learn.  As time goes on more people are going to request virtual school/online learning for the wrong reasons, they are not going to do well, and they will be back in the traditional setting.  The choice for virtual school should be a choice made by several people;  parents, teacher, counselor, principal and students.
Some of the schools in my district are probably equipped for virtual school, but others struggle with attendance, homework and parent involvement in the traditional setting.  If changes are made it will not be done rapidly.  It should be a very slow process because we want our children to be successful and each student that wishes to change from the traditional setting should be well prepared.

  1. Hi Erika,You bring in an excellent point about students not want to work with a teacher because they dislike something about the teacher, and unfortunately having that option is not always reflective of life. The most valuable employees are said to be those with writing, organization, and teaming skills. You learn those important skills by doing, I like your sentiment that whether or not a student takes part in a virtual program in a school should be a shared decision on what will be best for the student. Also, is the student whining because they are not doing what they could be
doing to make progress in the class, like not turning in assignments and homework timely. If that is the case, it would be naive to think that the student will have the maturity level to handle online courses. I thought this scenario was pretty interesting.

  2. HI. You are right that this idea is beneficial to students who are ill or who have family memebrs who are ill. However, this idea od virtual schooling can be helpful to the disruptive student too. I have had the "worst of the worst" behaviorally in my middle school and they do phenomanal work in the Blended Lab. In their words, they are successful because they "don't have to put up with 29 other idiots in the room". They don't have to worry about all these other personalities. They can really be given the chance to stand on their own and be successful.
